Mar 28, 2019 Windows Media Player includes some of the most popular codecs, like MP3, Windows Media Audio, and Windows Media Video. However, it doesn't include the codecs required for Blu‑ray Disc files, FLAC files, or FLV files. If something isn’t working in Windows Media Player, you might not have the right codec on your PC. Download this app from Microsoft Store for Windows 10, Windows 10. Included codecs:. MPEG-1 Video Codec. MPEG-2 Video Codec.
On my new Windows 7 Netbook, I cannot play DVDs. I get a message saying that I need to BUY a Codec for Mpeg-2.On XP and Vista, installing Nero 7 seemed to fix this but it doesn't work on Win 7.
Any suggestions?

Can someone verify that I am using the correct method to select the preferred MPEG-2 decoder in windows XP? The problem stems from this situation.
I installed ffdshow and MPEG-2s play in WMP but there are no thumbnail previews in Explorer.
I installed Stinkys MPEG-2 codec as well and got thumbnail previews in explorer and MPEG-2's would play in WMP but were stretched on the horizontal aspect (This didn't happen when I only had ffdshow installed).
I installed Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility and set ffdshow as the preferred MPEG-2 decoder. The aspect problem mentioned above still happened.
Is there something that I am missing, a setting or not done correctly so that WMP would use the ffdshow decoder not Stinkys? Many thanks.
